Fiction Expresss Monday : Falling Backwards by Jenny Ryan

Voting has closed over at Fiction Express for this week, so here’s what I thought about the latest chapter of Falling Backwards. Please be aware there are spoilers ahead for the chapter.

The chapter starts by introducing us to Leah, she’s midway through a flight to Oaxaca, Mexico where she’s going to be spending the next four months as part of an exchange from school. A series of events leads her to talk to April who made the same exchange trip 18 years previously. April’s returning to Oaxaca to try and work out where her life went wrong, her descriptions of her time in Oaxaca do nothing to reassure Leah who’s feeling nervous about her trip. Up to this point I was really looking forward to reading about the two trips to Mexico when wham the plot takes a huge twist and Leah finds herself the victim of both a time slip and body swap! So Leah is now in April’s body back at the time April is about to go on her very own exchange, how on earth is this going to work?

Straight away I loved the nostalic touches, as an almost teen myself in 1994 I know I’m going to enjoy the mentions of things such as VCRs and personal CD players. I also like the inclusion of the old Mexican lady, her presence straight away puts me in mind of Mike’s attempts to find his spirit guide in 17 Again, a film which I love.

I was really torn between two of the options when it came to the vote. In the end I settled for Leah going on the bus with the rest of the students. I can’t wait to see which option wins this week.
