Second week of lectures and my enthusiasm is still pretty good. Three lectures again this week, though a different mix to last week’s.
The reading and homework for last week covered the basic introduction to collection management, and most interesting for me time spent exploring Acqweb’s Directory of Collection Development Policies. I had a look at a few policies, the ones I found most interesting were for public libraries and school libraries.
This week’s lecture covered the basic differences between a collection development policy and a collection management policy, using our own university library’s policy as an example. Quite a bit of the hour was spent reading an article which covered the ground I’d read about in preparation for this week’s lecture, and then discussion of the first assignment of the module.
Information and Society.
This week’s lecture was on Barriers to Information and Censorship – a lot to cover in two hours! It was a really interesting session, it began initially by looking at all sorts of barriers to information – whilst some were pretty obvious there were some that I hadn’t necessarily thought about before and definitely gave me something to go away and think about. The second half of the lecture introduced what censorship is, and part of it was spent with us brainstorming examples of censorship that we knew about or had experienced – the discussion was varied (it always is with our group) and again sent us all away with food for thought.
The teaching sessions for web publishing are going to be once a month, with self directed learning to take place between them. This was the introductory session, first of all we were taught how to use the Open Learning Materials (surprisingly it was felt this needed to be explained pretty explicitly and backed up in writing, I think just the written sheet would have been sufficient) and then we had the two assignments explained to us.
I’m really looking forward to this module, it is going to be a combination of covering ground I already know and filling in some gaps particularly in terms of accessibility and the legislation governing online activity. The assignments are to draw up a proposal for a website and then to build it, I can’t wait!
